How to Choose a Cosmetic Brand Name You Can Own

A brand name is the one decision you cannot easily undo once it is on thousands of labels. The best names are easy to say, easy to spell and available to own. This guide covers all three tests before you fall in love with a word.

The goal

What a good cosmetic brand name has to do

A name carries your brand into every search box, every conversation and every shelf. It must do four jobs. It should be easy to remember after one hearing, easy to spell after one reading, free for you to use, and possible to protect.

Notice the last two. A name can be beautiful and still be taken, or too descriptive to protect. Check availability and trademark strength before you design a logo or order packaging.

Types of names

Five kinds of brand name and what each means for protection

TypeExample ideaTrademark strength
Invented wordA coined word with no meaningUsually strongest, because nobody else uses it
Arbitrary wordA real word unrelated to the productStrong, as long as it is not common in your class
SuggestiveHints at a benefit without stating itGood, but check similar marks
DescriptiveSays exactly what the product doesWeakest. Often refused or hard to enforce
Founder or place nameYour name or a regionCan work, but personal names may conflict with others

For a cosmetic brand the safe zone is invented, arbitrary or suggestive. Plain descriptive names such as a generic ingredient or a generic benefit invite objections and give you little to defend.

Say it aloud

Test the name on people, not just on paper

01

Say it on the phone

Ask someone to write it down after hearing it once. If the spelling varies, customers will struggle to search for you.

02

Check meaning in other languages

Many Indian customers speak several languages. Ask native speakers whether the word means something unfortunate in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or any language relevant to your market.

03

Read it on a label

Imagine it in small print on a 30 ml bottle. Long names shrink and become hard to read.

04

Check it with your claim

Names that promise results can create claim problems. A name that implies a cure or a guaranteed result may be treated as a claim.

05

Sleep on it

Shortlist three and revisit after a few days. A name that still feels right is usually the one.

The advertising rules apply to names as well as copy. See beauty advertising rules in India and cosmetic claims in India.

Availability

The five availability checks

✓Trademark search: look up your name and close variants on the IP India public search in the relevant classes. A class 3 search matters most for cosmetics.
✓Business name: check that no company in your state uses the same or a near-identical name.
✓Domain: check that the .in or .com domain is free. Short and clean beats clever.
✓Social handles: check Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp business names.
✓Marketplace search: search the name on Amazon, Nykaa and Google. If another brand dominates results, you will be hard to find.

A clear result on one check is not clearance on all. A name may be free as a domain and still be taken as a trademark. A professional search is worth the cost if you plan to invest heavily in the brand. See trademark classes 3, 5 and 35 for what to search and what to file.

Before you commit

Do these things before printing anything

01

Search and shortlist

Run the checks above for your top three names.

02

File or plan to file

Filing a trademark application early protects your date of filing. Our guide to registering a cosmetic brand name covers the steps.

03

Secure domain and handles

Register them the same day as your decision.

04

Then design

Logo, pack and label design should start only after the name is cleared.

05

Tell your manufacturer

Your name goes on the label, so share it before artwork is approved.

Your label must also carry details such as the manufacturer’s name and address and the product name. Read packaging and label design and label requirements before you finalise artwork.

Mistakes

Naming mistakes that cost money later

✓Choosing a name close to a famous brand. Even if you never meant to copy, confusion is the test.
✓Using a generic word as the main name, then discovering you cannot stop competitors from using it.
✓Putting a place name with a product word (for example a region plus ‘herbal’) and expecting exclusive rights.
✓Naming the brand after one product, then struggling to add others.
✓Skipping the trademark search because the domain was free.

A brand name that is cleared early saves you from reprinting packaging and rebuilding your site. For the whole launch sequence see how to start a skincare brand in India.

Creative method

A simple method for generating name ideas

01

List meaning words

Write ten words for the feeling you want: calm, bright, rooted, clean. Include words from Indian languages if they suit your story.

02

Mix and shorten

Combine, trim and respell. Two short syllables are easier to remember than five.

03

Check the sound

Say each name with and without the product after it, such as ‘name serum’ or ‘name face wash’.

04

Cut anything awkward

If it is hard to say in a noisy room, remove it.

05

Keep a shortlist of three

Run the availability checks on all three. Names get taken while you decide.

Avoid names that depend on a pun in one language or a spelling trick that customers will get wrong. If people must ask how to spell it, they will search for something else instead.

After naming

Protect the name across your brand

Naming is the first step in building an asset. Once you choose, use the name the same way everywhere: on the pack, the site, invoices and social media. Consistent use helps customers find you and helps you show that the name is yours.

✓Keep dated copies of artwork, invoices and first sales as evidence of use.
✓Add TM next to the name until registration is granted. See TM and R.
✓Register the domain and the main social handles in the same week.
✓Mention the brand owner’s name and address correctly on the label, because the label must show who is responsible for the product. See label requirements.

If you plan to export one day, check the name in your target countries too. Our export guide covers what overseas buyers expect.

Name checklist

Score your shortlist

TestName AName BName C
Easy to say after one hearing
Easy to spell after one reading
Trademark search clear in class 3
Domain and handles free
No unfortunate meaning in key languages
Distinctive (not purely descriptive)
Room to add new product types
Fits a 30 ml label

Mark each cell yes, no or unsure. A name with any ‘no’ in the trademark row should be dropped. A name with several ‘unsure’ needs research. Choose the name with the fewest question marks, not the one you like most on day one.

Test with people

Test the final two with the people who matter

Show your last two names to five people in your target group. Do not ask which they like. Ask what kind of product they expect from each name, how much they would expect it to cost and whether they would trust it on a bathroom shelf. The answers show what the name signals.

✓If people guess the wrong category, the name is misleading.
✓If people guess a very different price band, the name sends the wrong signal.
✓If people mispronounce it, expect word-of-mouth problems.
✓If people ask ‘what does it mean?’ and the answer is a nice story, that is a good sign.

Naming is also part of how you position against others. Read choosing a skincare niche and target customer so the name and the positioning pull in the same direction.

Good to know

How to Choose a Cosmetic Brand Name You Can Own: common questions

Can I use my own name as a cosmetic brand?

You can, but check the trademark register for similar names in the same class, and remember that your name may already be someone else’s mark.

Does a free domain mean the name is available?

No. A domain, a company name and a trademark are separate. Check all of them.

Should the name include the word skincare or herbal?

Descriptive words are weak as trademarks and can be hard to protect. They are better as a descriptor beside a distinctive name.

When should I file the trademark?

Before you invest in packaging and advertising. A search first, then filing as soon as you are sure of the name.

Can my manufacturer help with naming?

Manufacturers can advise on what fits a formula or pack, but the name and its legal clearance are your responsibility.
