|---|---|---|
| Onion hair oil | Onion extract or seed oil in a carrier | Hair fall, shine |
| Rosemary hair oil | Rosemary leaf oil in a carrier | Scalp care, density |
| Castor hair oil | Castor oil, pure or blended | Thickness, brows and lashes, scalp massage |
| Amla hair oil | Amla fruit infused in oil | Traditional, dark and shine |
| Bhringraj hair oil | Bhringraj herb infused in oil | Traditional hair care |
The base oil decides how the oil feels
| Carrier | Feel | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coconut oil | Medium, penetrates hair | Solidifies in cold weather; a familiar Indian base |
| Sesame oil | Medium to heavy, warming | Traditional in ayurvedic oils |
| Mineral oil | Light, non-sticky, cheap | Does not penetrate; positioned for lightness and cost |
| Almond and argan oils | Light, nourishing | Premium, shorter shelf life if unprotected |
| Castor oil | Thick, sticky | Usually blended, not used alone, in large packs |
Most successful hair oils blend two or three carriers so the product pours well and feels clean on the scalp.
How hair oils are made
Oil production is simpler than cream production, but not simple. The work is in the infusion, the filtering and the antioxidant system.
Ayurvedic oils and the licence question
An oil made as a cosmetic, with herbs for fragrance and story, follows cosmetic rules. A classical ayurvedic formulation, made to a traditional recipe and sold with a therapeutic claim, comes under AYUSH drug rules and licensing. The label wording and the manufacturing licence must match the claim.
Read our guide on how to start an ayurvedic brand before you choose between the two.
How we develop a hair oil
Oil development starts with the carrier blend, then the herb or extract. We make small trial batches and test them for clarity, smell and stain. A classic herb infusion may take several rounds because the colour and smell develop over days.
When the base is stable, we pick the bottle and cap, and run storage tests in the final pack.
A loyal, repeat category
Hair oil customers are loyal, and gifting and festival sales are strong. A single hero oil plus a matching shampoo is a common first range. Add a second oil only when the first one sells.

Hair Oil: common questions
What is the minimum order for hair oil?
Private label starts at 1,000 units. A custom formula by our lab starts at 2,000 units.
Can I make a hair oil without mineral oil?
Yes. Natural carriers such as coconut, sesame and almond work well. They feel richer, and some solidify in cold weather.
How do you stop the oil from going rancid?
We add antioxidants, protect against light and air with the right pack, and check shelf life through stability testing.
Can one hair oil have more than one herb?
Yes, but each herb adds colour, smell and cost. Pick one or two that support your story.
Why does coconut hair oil turn solid?
Coconut oil solidifies below around room temperature in winter. It is normal and reverses when warmed.
Can hair oil be filled in plastic?
Yes, in suitable plastics. We test compatibility, since some oils soften some plastics.
