Formula

Waxes, butters and oils

The wax sets the hardness, the butter gives cushion and the oil gives glide. Beeswax, candelilla and carnauba are common waxes. Shea, cocoa and mango butters and oils like castor, jojoba and almond complete the base.

✓More wax gives a firmer stick that withstands heat.
✓Castor oil gives shine.
✓Vegan balms replace beeswax with candelilla or carnauba.
Safety

Lips and ingestion

Lip products are partly swallowed. Use colours and flavours suitable for lip products, and avoid strong essential oils. SPF lip balms need the same test evidence as other sunscreens, see sunscreen.

Pack

Stick or tube?

Stick balms need a moulding and filling setup, while tube balms are filled as a soft balm. Heat resistance matters for transport in summer. Tell us how you plan to ship and sell.

How we develop it

How a lip balm is developed

We choose the wax-to-oil ratio first, since it sets hardness and glide. Then we select butters, colour and flavour, and test the balm for melting point and gloss.

Tinted balms need colours that are safe for lips and stable. Fruit flavours must be lip-safe and not too strong.

We check the pack too: sticks need a mould and tubes need a soft balm, so the formula and the pack must match.

Positioning

Selling lip balm

Lip balm is a gift, impulse and add-on product. Pretty packaging, flavours and tint options sell well. Subscription bundles and multi-packs help.

An SPF lip balm adds a useful, health-linked story. See the sunscreen page for how SPF claims are supported.

Good to know

Lip Balm: common questions

Can I make a vegan lip balm?

Yes, using candelilla or carnauba in place of beeswax.

Can the balm melt in transit?

Hard-wax formulas resist heat better. We test at higher temperatures.

Can I add SPF?

Yes, with tested UV filters.

Why is my lip balm grainy?

Butters crystallised during cooling. Process control prevents it.

Can I make a tinted lip balm?

Yes.

Is a stick or tube better?

Stick for convenience.

Do lip balms expire?

Yes; oils turn rancid.
