Emulsions

Oil-in-water or water-in-oil?

Most modern face creams are oil-in-water: small oil droplets spread in water. They feel light, absorb quickly and suit most customers. Water-in-oil creams, such as a traditional cold cream, are richer and leave a protective film.

✓Oil-in-water: day creams, lotions, gel-creams. Easier to scale.
✓Water-in-oil: cold creams, barrier balms, very dry skin products.
✓The emulsifier, thickener and oil phase decide the feel. Cetearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate and polysorbates are common building blocks.
✓A cream needs a preservative that works in both phases.
Day, cold and herbal

Three classic creams

✓Day cream: light, absorbs fast, often carries SPF or a brightening active.
✓Cold cream: a traditional water-in-oil cream that removes make-up and softens skin, loved in winter.
✓Herbal cream: built around extracts like aloe, saffron, turmeric or sandalwood. Plant extracts change colour and smell over time, so stability testing is essential.

Tell us the feel you want. Rich and creamy, light and gel-like, or somewhere between. We make samples at different textures.

Pack

Jars, tubes and pumps

Jars look premium but expose the cream to air and fingers. Airless pumps and tubes keep the formula cleaner, which matters for actives. A 50 g jar and a 50 ml pump can have very different cost and shelf life.

How we develop it

How a face cream is developed

Cream development begins with the emulsion. We pick an emulsifier system that suits your texture and climate, build the oil phase from emollients and butters and balance the water phase with humectants. The first sample is a base cream with no actives, so you can judge the feel on its own.

Only then do we add actives, fragrance and colour, one change at a time, because every addition can thin the cream or shift its stability. We run the final formula through heat and cold cycles in the pack you have chosen.

Plan for at least two sample rounds. Cream texture is personal, and most brands refine it once after real use.

Positioning

Where creams sit in a range

Creams are the repeat product. Serums bring attention, creams bring steady reorders, and the best brands have one cream that customers buy every month.

Pick the concern, not just the ingredient: tan, tone, dryness or ageing. Then name the product for the concern. Customers search by problem first.

Testing

Tests for a cream

✓Emulsion stability: centrifuge, freeze-thaw and heat storage.
✓Viscosity and spreadability.
✓pH.
✓Microbial challenge.
✓Pack compatibility, especially for tubes and airless pumps.
Mistakes

Common cream errors

✓Choosing a texture without testing it in the target climate.
✓Too many actives that destabilise the emulsion.
✓Jars for oxidation-prone actives.
✓Adding SPF without testing.
✓Launching five creams in the first range.
Range

Planning a cream range

Start with a moisturiser for daily use and a night cream. Add a concern cream such as de-tan or anti-ageing later. Complete the range with a face wash and a sunscreen.

Good to know

Face Cream: common questions

What is the MOQ for a face cream?

Private label starts at 1,000 units. A new formula under third-party manufacturing starts at 2,000 units.

Can you make a cream without mineral oil?

Yes. We can build the oil phase from plant oils, esters and silicones. Tell us your ingredient preferences.

How long does a cream take to develop?

Private label takes 4 to 6 weeks, third-party takes 6 to 8 weeks. Creams need stability checks, so they cannot be rushed.

Can I add SPF to a face cream?

You can, but SPF needs test data and a stable filter system. Most brands launch a separate sunscreen.

How long does a cream last once opened?

The period-after-opening symbol on the pack shows it. We set it from stability and preservation results.

Can creams be natural?

Natural-origin creams are possible, with a narrower preservative choice.

Why does my cream separate?

The emulsifier or process is not balanced. Our lab tests for this.

Do I need airless packs?

For oxidation-prone actives, yes.
