How to Fund a Cosmetic Startup in India: Bootstrap, Mudra and More

Most beauty brands start with savings and grow from sales. Others use a bank scheme or an investor. Each route has trade-offs. This guide explains the main options, what to prepare and how to keep your first order small enough to be safe.

Start by reducing the need

The cheapest funding is a smaller first order

Before you look for money, shrink the amount you need. A first range of three products at the minimum quantity needs far less than a launch of ten products. At Formuluxe, private label starts at 1,000 units, third-party at 2,000 and bulk at 5,000, and the minimum depends on the product. Read cosmetic minimum order quantity.

Then work out the real number with the cost guide and unit economics. A funding request built on quotes is credible. One built on guesses is not.

Option 1

Bootstrapping: savings and sales

✓Pros: you keep control and ownership, and you learn to spend carefully.
✓Cons: growth is limited by cash, and personal savings are at risk.
✓Works well when: your first order is modest and you can reorder from sales.

Many founders combine a small first batch with pre-orders, waiting lists or sales to a first group of customers. This brings in cash before the next order is due. Use only real demand, and be clear with customers about delivery dates.

Option 2

Bank loans and Mudra

The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) provides loans to small and micro enterprises through banks and other lenders. See the MUDRA website for the current scheme. As reported by Business Standard in April 2025, the categories are:

CategoryLoan limit as reported
ShishuUp to Rs 50,000
KishoreRs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh
TarunAbove Rs 5 lakh, up to Rs 10 lakh
Tarun PlusUp to Rs 20 lakh, for entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid an earlier Tarun loan

Tarun Plus was announced in the July 2024 Budget and notified on 25 October 2024, according to that report. The article was inconsistent about the Tarun limit, so confirm the current figures with your bank or on the MUDRA site before you plan around them. Lending terms, interest rates and eligibility depend on the lender.

✓Bring: your business plan, supplier quotes, KYC, registration papers (see Udyam and Startup India) and bank statements.
✓Ask: what the loan can be used for, what security is needed, the interest rate and fees, and the repayment schedule.
✓Compare at least two lenders.
Option 3

Credit guarantee and other MSME support

Governments and banks offer schemes aimed at micro and small enterprises, including guarantees that can reduce the security a lender asks for. Availability and terms change. Ask your bank which ones apply to your business, and keep your Udyam certificate ready.

Beware of agents who promise guaranteed loans for an upfront fee. Official schemes are applied for through banks and lenders directly.

Option 4

Startup India and investors

Startup India recognition (DPIIT) can open doors to startup programmes and some benefits, if your company meets the criteria. See the Startup India portal and our guide to Udyam and Startup India for beauty brands.

✓Angel investors and funds usually look for a clear market, a team, traction and a path to scale.
✓Investors expect a clear story: customer, product, repeat purchase, margin and plan for the money.
✓Giving equity is permanent. Make sure you are comfortable with the trade.

A contract-manufactured brand can be a good investment if its margins and repeat rates are strong. That is why unit economics matter so much.

Option 5

Supplier terms and customer cash

✓Ask suppliers for payment terms. Some will give staged payments after a first order, but do not assume it.
✓Use pre-orders carefully, with honest delivery dates.
✓Reorder from sales rather than new capital.
✓Negotiate packaging minimums, which are often the largest cash drain.

Terms with your manufacturer should be in writing. See contract manufacturing.

Prepare

What to prepare before you ask for money

01

A one-page plan

Customer, products, channels, milestones. See the business plan guide.

02

A budget built from quotes

With sources.

03

Unit economics

Contribution and break-even.

04

Registrations

GST, Udyam and trademark progress.

05

A launch timeline

See the launch checklist.

06

A realistic downside

What happens if sales are half of your target.

A lender or investor who sees that you have thought about the downside will trust the upside more.

Warnings

Funding mistakes to avoid

✓Borrowing to fund stock you have not tested with customers.
✓Personal guarantees you do not understand.
✓Paying upfront fees to loan agents.
✓Hiding the real costs, such as packaging minimums and marketing.
✓Spending everything on the first batch and leaving nothing for sales.

Match the money to the stage: small amounts for testing, larger amounts only after the product sells.

Stages

Match the money to the stage

StageWhat you needSensible source
TestSamples, a small first batch, a simple siteSavings
ProveA second batch, more marketing, a few reviewsSales plus savings, or a small loan
GrowMore products, retail entry, stockBank loan, credit schemes or investors
ScaleLarger runs, new marketsInvestors or larger finance, built on proven margins

Raising big money before you have proof makes the money expensive. Raising small money first lets you prove the idea cheaply.

Loan readiness

A loan readiness checklist

✓Business registered, with PAN and bank account.
✓GST registered where needed. See GST for cosmetic brands.
✓Udyam certificate. See Udyam and Startup India.
✓One-page plan, quote-based budget and unit economics.
✓Statements showing regular, honest bank activity.
✓Quotes from your manufacturer and packaging supplier.
✓A clear statement of how the loan will be repaid, based on sales you can reasonably expect.

Ask Formuluxe for a written quote and timeline to attach to your application. See how it works.

Repayment

Plan the repayment before you borrow

A loan has monthly payments whether sales arrive or not. Before you sign, work out the payment per month and compare it with the contribution you expect from sales, using the formulas in unit economics. Test a bad case where sales are half what you hope.

✓If the payment is covered in the bad case, the loan is probably safe.
✓If it is covered only in the good case, borrow less.
✓Keep a reserve for slow months and for reorders.
Pitch

How to explain your brand to a lender or investor in one page

01

The customer and the problem

Who she is and what annoys her today.

02

The product and why it is different

Your hero product and the one reason to choose it.

03

The proof so far

Samples tested, waiting list, first sales, reviews.

04

The numbers

Landed cost, price, contribution and break-even from your sheet. See unit economics.

05

The plan for the money

What you will buy with it and what it will achieve by when.

06

The risks

What could go wrong and what you will do about it.

Keep it to one page and bring the quotes behind each number. People who lend or invest in small brands see many hopeful plans; a clear one with evidence stands out.

Summary

Key takeaways

✓Shrink the first order before you look for money.
✓Check current Mudra limits and terms with your lender.
✓Build requests on quotes, unit economics and registrations.
✓Never borrow more than you could repay in a slow-sales case.

If you would like help turning these points into a brief and a quote, the Formuluxe team is happy to look at your plan. See how we work with new brands.
