Cosmetic Brand Launch Checklist: Your First 90 Days in India

Launches go wrong in small ways: a label printed before a legal check, a barcode missing from a listing, a website with no reviews. This checklist puts every task in order across about 90 days, so nothing important is left to the last week.

How to use it

Use this as a map, not a promise

Every brand has its own pace. Formula approvals, pack lead times, licence replies and artwork changes can move the dates. At Formuluxe, private label production typically takes 4 to 6 weeks and third-party 6 to 8 weeks once formula and packaging are agreed, and your quote confirms the timing for your product.

Treat the weeks below as a sequence of dependencies. If something slips, look at what depends on it. For the thinking behind the plan see the cosmetic business plan guide and how to start a skincare brand in India.

Weeks 1 to 2

Foundations: customer, products, name

✓Write the customer paragraph and a one-sentence difference. See choosing a niche.
✓Choose three products and their roles. See your first range.
✓Shortlist three names and run availability checks. See choosing a brand name.
✓Collect the first quotes and ask for samples. See how to brief a manufacturer.
✓Decide your business structure with an accountant.
Output at the end of week 2: a one-page plan, three product ideas, a name shortlist and your first manufacturer quotes.
Weeks 3 to 4

Protection and paperwork

✓File the trademark application for your chosen name. See trademark classes.
✓Confirm your licence position in writing with the State Licensing Authority. See do you need a licence to sell cosmetics.
✓Register GST and Udyam where they apply. See GST for cosmetic brands and Udyam and Startup India.
✓Open a business bank account.
✓Test samples with at least five people in your target group.
✓Approve the formula in writing.

Many of these run alongside each other. Put the licence conversation first, because it can change your label.

Weeks 5 to 8

Packaging, label and production

✓Choose packaging that suits the formula. See how to choose cosmetic packaging.
✓Register with GS1 India and assign barcodes. See GS1 barcodes.
✓Draft the label with legal details and check it against Rule 34 and legal metrology. See packaging and label design.
✓Get a printed proof on the real pack.
✓Place the production order and agree timelines and payment in writing.
✓Prepare product photos, description and ingredient list for listings.

Do not print the full label run before the first filled sample has been checked. A small print run is cheap insurance.

Weeks 9 to 10

Receiving stock and building the store

✓Inspect the delivery against the batch records: quantity, labels, batch number, expiry.
✓Keep retained samples from the batch.
✓Set up the website or marketplace listings. See where to sell cosmetics.
✓Test the order, payment, invoice and shipping flow with real orders.
✓Check your GST invoice format.
✓Write the claims file: each claim with its evidence. See cosmetic claims in India.

Order a test parcel to yourself. Seeing the unboxing and the delivery time as a customer would is the cheapest quality check you will do.

Weeks 11 to 12

Soft launch

✓Send products to your first users and creators, with proper disclosure. See influencer marketing and ASCI rules.
✓Ask for honest feedback and reviews.
✓Run a small paid test with a clear cap.
✓Answer every message quickly.
✓Track units, conversion, returns and repeat interest.

The aim is learning. Fix the packaging, listing or message problems you find before you spend on a bigger launch.

Week 13

Review and decide

01

Calculate real unit economics

Use actual costs and sales. See unit economics.

02

Read every review

Look for repeated phrases.

03

Decide per product

Reorder, change or retire.

04

Plan the next batch

With learnings on texture, pack or price.

05

Decide funding needs

If you need more, see funding a cosmetic startup.

Write down the decision and the numbers behind it. Your next launch will be easier for it.

Roles

Who does what during a launch

PersonOwnsNeeds from you
You (brand owner)Decisions, approvals, claims, customerClear briefs, quick sign-offs
ManufacturerFormula, production, batch recordsApproved specification, packaging on time, payment
Packaging supplierPacks and closuresSpecification, quantity, lead time
DesignerLabel and pack artworkLegal text, dimensions, barcode
AccountantGST, books, registrationsInvoices, bank statements
Trademark attorney (optional)Search, filing, repliesName, classes, goods list

Write down who owns each task and by when. Most delays are not hard problems; they are tasks without an owner.

Risks

What usually delays a launch

01

Late artwork approval

Fix: proof early, give one consolidated set of comments.

02

Packaging lead time

Fix: order packs at formula approval, not after.

03

Label corrections

Fix: check legal text against Rule 34 and legal metrology before design. See label design.

04

Licence uncertainty

Fix: ask your State Licensing Authority in week 1 and get it in writing.

05

Cash gaps

Fix: map payment dates against income. See funding.

06

Changes after sampling

Fix: freeze the specification before production.

Add a buffer of two weeks to any date that depends on a third party.

Launch week

The final week before you sell

✓Order a full test parcel and time the delivery.
✓Read the whole product page as a customer and check every claim.
✓Check ingredient lists, MRP and net quantity on the listing against the pack.
✓Confirm the barcode scans and matches the listing.
✓Check your returns, privacy and terms pages.
✓Prepare answers to the five questions customers will ask.
✓Make sure someone is ready to answer messages on launch day.

Then launch smaller than you want to, and fix the first problems before you widen. A calm soft launch beats a loud broken one.

Milestones

Money milestones across the 90 days

PhaseTypical paymentsPlan for
Weeks 1 to 4Design start, trademark fee, samples shippingSmall, but needed early
Weeks 5 to 8Manufacturing advance, packaging, label print, barcodeThe largest outflow
Weeks 9 to 10Balance to manufacturer, shipping, store setupSecond large outflow
Weeks 11 to 13Marketing tests, creator products, returnsVariable; set a cap

Match this with your own quotes and payment terms. Knowing when money leaves helps you decide when to ask for funding. See funding a cosmetic startup.

Summary

Key takeaways

✓Work in dependencies: licence position, label and packaging come before print and production.
✓Order packaging at formula approval, not after.
✓Soft launch small, fix problems, then widen.
✓Review real unit economics in week 13 before you reorder.

If you would like help turning these points into a brief and a quote, the Formuluxe team is happy to look at your plan. See how we work with new brands.

Good to know

Cosmetic Brand Launch Checklist: common questions

How long does it take to launch a cosmetic brand?

Plan for about three months from a clear brief to a soft launch. Production for private label typically takes 4 to 6 weeks and third-party 6 to 8 weeks once formula and packaging are agreed.

What should I do first?

Define your customer and your three products, then check your name and licence position. These decisions shape everything else.

Can I print labels while the formula is still being approved?

It is risky. Formula or fill-volume changes can force a reprint, so print only after approval and a proof on the real pack.

Do I need to wait for the trademark before I launch?

No, you can launch under the TM symbol while the application is pending, but search first and file early.

What is a soft launch?

A limited release to a small group so you can learn and fix problems before a wider launch.

What should I do the week before launch?

Order a test parcel, check listings against the pack, confirm barcodes scan, review claims and prepare customer replies.

Who should check the label before printing?

Someone who has read Rule 34 and the legal metrology requirements, ideally your manufacturer or an advisor, plus a careful proofread by you.

Ready to start the clock?

Share your customer, products and target date. We will map the timeline for your product and send a written quote.
