Three ways a startup can start

A startup does not need a factory, a chemist on payroll or a large first order. It needs a clear customer, one good product and a manufacturing partner that will explain each step in plain words. This page walks through that path as we run it at Formuluxe, a contract cosmetics manufacturer in Pundri, Haryana.

RouteBest forMinimum orderTypical timeline
Private labelYour first launch; you pick a ready-tested formula and add your brand, scent and pack1,000 units4 to 6 weeks
Third-party manufacturingA product made to your brief; we develop the formula end to end, and you can bring your own formula if you have one2,000 units6 to 8 weeks
BulkA proven product you are ready to scale5,000 unitsQuoted per order

Most startups begin with private label and move to third-party once sales prove the product. Samples are free on every route; you pay shipping only.

The path

From idea to shelf in six steps

Six steps, in order
  1. 01
    Idea and customer
Who you sell to, which hero product, what price band.
  2. 02
    Brief
Write a one-page brief the manufacturer can quote from.
  3. 03
    Formula and sample
Pick a ready-tested formula or have one developed. Free sample.
  4. 04
    Packaging and label
Choose packs, design labels, add barcode and legal text.
  5. 05
    First batch
Made, checked, filled, labelled and boxed.
  6. 06
    Launch and reorder
Sell, learn from reviews and reorder what moves.

The order matters. Founders who design packaging before the formula is approved, or buy a barcode before the name is cleared, usually redo work. Our 90-day launch checklist shows what to do in which week, and How it works shows what we do on our side.

Start with the brief

A good brief is the cheapest way to save time. Name the customer, the product, the texture and finish, what to avoid, the pack and the quantity. We explain how in how to brief a cosmetic manufacturer.

Product

Choose a first product that can win

Your first range should be small. One hero product that solves one problem for one customer is easier to make, test, photograph and explain than five products at once. Add the second and third once the first has reviews.

✓Pick a category where you understand the customer and can speak about the product honestly.
✓Look at the products people already reorder: cleansers, moisturisers, serums, sun care, hair oil, lip care.
✓Decide the claim you want to make early; it shapes the formula and the label. See cosmetic claims in India.
✓Avoid a long range at launch. Each variant adds a minimum order, a label and a barcode.

We make 15 categories, from skincare and sun care to hair, body, men’s grooming and baby care. Read how to choose your first product range and how to choose a niche before you commit. If the product itself is your difference, read about custom formulation and R&D.

Quantities

Minimum orders, explained

Minimums exist because every batch has fixed costs: cleaning the line, setting up filling, quality checks and records. Spread over more units, the cost per unit falls. That is also why ordering far more than you can sell is a trap: the unit price looks better but the cash is tied up and the stock can expire.

Where the three starting points sit (units)
Private label20%
1,000 units
Third-party40%
2,000 units
Bulk100%
5,000 units

Start near the minimum, watch how fast it sells and reorder with real data. The full logic is in cosmetic minimum order quantity in India and the money side in cosmetic unit economics.

Packaging

Packaging options for a first launch

PackSuitsKeep in mind
Glass bottle with dropperSerums, facial oilsPremium feel; heavier, breakable, dark glass protects light-sensitive formulas
Airless pumpCreams and serums that dislike airProtects the formula; usually costs more
TubeSunscreen, gels, hand creamHygienic and easy to carry
JarCreams, balms, masksLooks good; fingers touch the product
PET or HDPE bottleToners, lotions, shampoo, body washLight and widely available
Carton boxRetail shelf and shippingAdds protection and room for legal text

We choose packs with you, print labels and box the product. Always test the formula in the pack before you commit. Read packaging and label design, what goes on a cosmetic label and barcodes and GS1.

Samples

Use your free sample properly

A sample shows you the texture, scent, absorption and finish before you spend on packaging. It is free; you pay shipping only. Use it properly:

✓Test it on yourself and on a few people who fit your customer, over more than one day.
✓Compare it with the product you want to beat, side by side.
✓Note texture, scent, finish and how it feels after an hour.
✓Send changes in writing so we can adjust and re-sample.
✓Approve in writing before production starts.

For stability and safety questions see stability testing. Request a free sample when your brief is ready.

Before launch

Rules to check before you sell

A cosmetic brand owner has legal duties even when someone else makes the product. We help with label wording and product registration guidance, but you should confirm each point with the official body or an advisor. Start here:

✓Licence questions: do you need a licence to sell cosmetics and the CDSCO site.
✓Tax and registration: GST, Udyam and Startup India.
✓Barcode: register directly with GS1 India.
✓Advertising: beauty advertising rules and ASCI.

Our compliance checklist collects these in one place. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Avoid

Mistakes new brands make

✓Choosing a manufacturer on unit price alone.
✓Launching five products when one would do.
✓Designing packaging before the formula is approved.
✓Making claims the label or the formula cannot support.
✓Ordering more than you can sell before the product has reviews.
✓Skipping a written brief and approving samples verbally.
✓Forgetting the barcode, MRP and legal text until the label is printed.

Funding, margins and channels get their own guides: funding a cosmetic startup, pricing and where to sell online.

Good to know

Questions from startups

Can a startup really work with a contract manufacturer?

Yes. Most new beauty brands do. The manufacturer makes, fills and packs; you own the brand, the customer and the marketing.

What is the minimum order for a startup?

Private label starts at 1,000 units, third-party at 2,000 and bulk at 5,000.

Do I need my own formula?

No. With private label you pick a ready-tested formula. With third-party manufacturing we develop the formula end to end; bringing your own is optional.

Are samples free?

Yes. You pay shipping only.

How long does it take to launch?

Production takes about 4 to 6 weeks on private label and 6 to 8 weeks on third-party. Add time for label design, barcode and trademark work.

Can you help with packaging and labels?

Yes. We choose packs with you, print labels and box the product, and we guide you on label wording.

How much does it cost to start a skincare brand in India?

It depends on your range, packs and channels, so we do not quote a single figure. Our cost guide shows what to budget for.
